Who We Are
We are a “Virginia Baptist” Church and we support the “Baptist General Association of Virginia” (BGAV), the “Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia” (CBFVA), and the “Southern Baptist Convention” (SBC). The church subscribes to The Baptist Faith and Message* statement as adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention in its 1963 meeting. We allow both men and women to serve in the position of deacon.
The congregation of the Culpeper Baptist Church is older by two years than is our nation. It was born in 1774. The early 1770′s were troubled times religiously as well as politically. Nathaniel Sunders, a pastor from Orange County, was once imprisoned in the Culpeper jail. It was he, together with David Thomas, who constituted Mount Poney Church.
Apparently the first meeting house stood on the slope of Mount Poney and then was moved down to the foot. The next location was to a piece of donated property at Bell’s Ford. It moved from there to a part of the Public Square near the old jail. That building burned and its replacement still stands at the corner of East and Davis Streets. The site for the present church was acquired in 1951 and the Sanctuary was completed and dedicated in 1961. The Educational building, built in 1955, was completely renovated in 1985. The church tower was restored in 1990. From tiny beginnings the church membership has grown to the present.
We are affiliated with the Shiloh Baptist Association, the Baptist General Association of Virginia, the Southern Baptist Convention and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
